The Golden Rule

In Australia, almost all electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician. This isn't just a recommendation - it's the law, and penalties are serious.

What You CAN Do Yourself

The list is short:

  • Change a light bulb
  • Replace a plug or extension cord (not hardwired)
  • Plug in appliances
  • Reset a tripped circuit breaker
  • Replace a battery in a smoke alarm

That's essentially it.

What You CANNOT Do

  • Install or move a power point
  • Run new wiring or cables
  • Install a ceiling fan
  • Connect a hardwired appliance (oven, cooktop, hot water system)
  • Install or modify a switchboard
  • Any work in a bathroom or wet area
  • Solar panel installation
  • Install lighting fixtures (if it involves wiring)

The Penalties

Doing unlicensed electrical work in Australia can result in:

  • Fines up to $40,000 for individuals
  • Insurance voided - your home insurance won't cover damage from DIY electrical work
  • Compliance notices - you may be ordered to have the work redone by a licenced sparky
  • Criminal charges - if someone is injured or killed

Why the Rules Exist

Australia has some of the strictest electrical safety laws in the world, and for good reason:

  • Electrical fires cause over 40% of house fires in Australia
  • Faulty wiring is the leading cause of electrical fires
  • 15-20 Australians die from electrocution each year

How to Find a Good Electrician

  1. Check they hold a current electrical licence for your state
  2. Verify they have public liability insurance
  3. Get at least 3 quotes for non-emergency work
  4. Ask for a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) after the work is done
  5. Read reviews from previous customers

A Certificate of Compliance is your proof that the work was done safely and legally. Always ask for one.
