Do You Need a Permit?

In Queensland, whether you need a building permit depends on the size and height of your deck:

No Permit Required

  • Deck is no more than 1 metre above natural ground level
  • Total area is 10 square metres or less
  • Not attached to the house in a way that affects structural integrity
  • Not over or near an easement

Building Approval Required

  • Deck is over 1 metre above ground level
  • Total area exceeds 10 square metres
  • Attached to the house structure
  • Located in a flood zone or heritage area

Choosing the Right Timber

Queensland's climate demands the right materials:

  • Merbau - Popular hardwood, naturally termite-resistant, weathers to a silver grey
  • Spotted Gum - Australian hardwood, extremely durable, stunning natural grain
  • Treated Pine - Budget-friendly, requires regular sealing
  • Composite Decking - Low maintenance, consistent colour, but can get hot underfoot

Cost Guide

MaterialCost per m2 (installed)
Treated Pine$180 - $280
Merbau$350 - $500
Spotted Gum$400 - $550
Composite$300 - $600

Key Considerations for QLD

  1. Termite barriers - Required under the Building Code of Australia
  2. Cyclone ratings - North Queensland needs engineering for wind loads
  3. Drainage - Ensure water flows away from the house
  4. Balustrades - Required if the deck is 1m+ above ground (must be 1m high minimum)
  5. Pool fencing - If your deck provides access to a pool area, fencing rules apply

Finding a Qualified Builder

Always use a licensed builder (QBCC licence required in Queensland). Check their licence status on the QBCC website before signing any contracts.
